Many UK Flights were Cancelled Due to Storm

On April 6, a powerful storm named Kathleen swept over the UK at a speed of 112 kilometres per hour which caused Dozens of UK flights to be cancelled.

Because of the storm, it was also the hottest day of the year. At least 140 UK flights were cancelled following the issuance of a yellow weather warning by the British Met Office.

The areas of England’s northwest and southwest, as well as portions of Scotland, Wales, and Northern Ireland, were severely affected by the storm.

At Heathrow, Manchester, Birmingham, Edinburgh, and Belfast City airports, planes were cancelled, leaving thousands of passengers stranded. 

The Irish Met Office named the storm. The Irish Met Office named the storm for the eleventh time in the last eight months as the storm’s prognosis indicated it would pass over most of Ireland and inflict additional damage.

Strong gusts in Ireland have knocked out the electricity in at least 34,000 homes and businesses. The storm damaged a portion of the Titanic Belfast Museum’s roof. In addition, hundreds of trees have been taken down. Huge waves and strong winds have been observed striking the shore of Ireland. In some areas of England, at least 110 flood warnings were issued.

According to the Met Office, the storm carried warm air from northwest Africa over the North Atlantic.
