In an interview, Tourism Minister Vassilis Kikilias stated that Greece’s tourism season’s profits had surpassed projections and boosted economic growth as a consequence of diligent labour and a team effort that started in the previous autumn.
Few people thought that Greece would have a great tourist season when I received the first direct flight to the “Eleftherios Venizelos” airport back on March 7, sooner than ever before.
The epidemic was still running strong, the energy crisis was wreaking havoc on a worldwide scale, and the Ukraine war was only getting started, according to Kikilias.
Vassilis Kikilias emphasised how UBS had just increased its projection for Greek growth from 4 percent to 5.7 percent, with Greece’s tourism serving as the primary driver of GDP growth.
The total will be calculated at the conclusion of 2022, he added, noting that one of the major factors contributing to this outcome, particularly with regard to the start of the season, was an extension of Greece’s tourism season. Meanwhile, all necessary steps have been taken to ensure that the tourism season ends as late as possible.
“The messages we are getting from tour operators are very encouraging; there is demand for tourist packages throughout the autumn and even in December,” the tourism minister added.
He also said, “and because it is crucially important to always be one step ahead, for some time we have started contacts in order to attract North European and German pensioners to spend these months in Greece, where the winter is milder and energy demands are smaller compared with their own countries.
“In this way, they will save on money they would spend on heating if they stayed home and at the same time have the opportunity to enjoy the beauty of Greece and get to know Greek hospitality.” Vassilis Kikilias concluded.
